Coaching
ENERGIA has been providing coaching support on how to mainstream gender to the following energy projects:
- TIDE micro-hydro project in South India, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, which aims to establish a 12kW power plant to electrify 46 households by the end of 2009.
- Micro-hydro project, implemented by Energy Forum, Sri Lanka, which aims to establish a 14kW power plant to electrify 70 households by the end of 2009.
- Lao PDR Biogas Pilot Project (BPP), supported by SNV, which aims to install 6,600 biogas plants in urban and rural households by the end of 2009.
- Nepal Biogas Support Programme (BSP), supported by SNV, which aim to install 135,000 biogas plants by the end of 2009.
- Rambukolowa micro-hydro project, Sri Lanka supported by the Ministry of Power and Energy, in collaboration with NANEGE, which aims to establish a 10kW power plant to electrify 48 households by the end of 2009.
Through its coaching, ENERGIA has been working intensively with these energy projects in order to set gender goals beyond those addressing the basic needs for clean cooking fuels and lighting: that is, to address productive needs. In this respect, the Energy Forum of Sri Lanka has been working closely with the Electricity Consumer Societies of two micro-hydro plants to develop business plans to promote income generation for women. Similarly, TIDE and NANEGE are working on promoting ‘non-traditional’ roles for village women in the operation and management of their micro-hydro schemes. The biogas programmes in Lao and Nepal aim to see women involved in the contracting, marketing and installation of biogas plants.
