Gender in energy projects

ENERGIA is working to mainstream gender directly in three energy projects in the ENERGIA countries in Asia: Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

This initiative is expected to generate a body of first-hand experiences that:

  1. demonstrate how gender-specific outcomes can be generated in energy access projects;
  2. start a process of institutionalization of gender mainstreaming in energy projects; and
  3. provide a new strategic direction for rural energy access initiatives.

At the ground level, it will also result in new opportunities for social and economic empowerment of women in existing energy access projects and build the capacity and skills of project implementers to integrate gender concerns into their projects.

The projects

Philippines: Community-based Renewable Energy Systems

This project is implemented by SIBAT in the Philippines and funded by MISEREOR. The project aims to install 7 community-based micro-hydro power plants, 5 photovoltaic water pumps and 2 small wind energy systems to serve 1188 households.

Pakistan: The Pakistan Domestic Biogas Support Programme

This programme aims to construct 30,000 domestic biogas installations by 2019. It is jointly implemented by Winrock International and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV).

Sri Lanka: The Enhancing Renewable Energy Option project (EREO)

EREO is a project by Practical Action Sri Lanka. This project aims to establish community based biodiesel processing centre and install 250 pico hydro units to provide electricity to 17,000 people by 2012.
